Cutting Tool Sharpening Service

Timely tool sharpening and refurbishment extend tool life, reduce the need to purchase new tools, and lower total machining costs. Camcut offers Walter Tools’ original Reconditioning service, in which used tools are refurbished according to the geometries, coatings, and tolerances specified by the manufacturer.

Walter Tools’ Original Sharpening and Reconditioning Service

The true cost of a tool consists of more than just its purchase price. Total costs are also influenced by the tool’s service life, machining reliability, achievable surface quality, number of tool changes, and production downtime.

Walter Tools’ Reconditioning service restores tools to the original manufacturer’s quality standards. The process restores the tool’s original cutting geometry, coating, and tolerances using Walter’s manufacturing expertise and modern measurement methods.

Walter tools are reconditioned using the original geometries and coating processes. This helps ensure that the performance and service life of the reconditioned tool remain as consistent as possible, even over multiple use cycles.

The service covers Walter Titex solid-carbide drills with diameters of 3–32 mm, as well as Walter Prototyp solid-carbide milling cutters and thread mills with diameters of 6–32 mm. The possibility of reconditioning tools from other manufacturers can also be assessed on a tool-by-tool basis.

How the Walter Reconditioning Sharpening Service Works

Camcut assists with getting the service started, ordering a reconditioning box, and assessing whether tools are suitable for refurbishment. The customer can collect used tools in the box and send them for refurbishment as one batch.

The tools are recoated using the original coating process, and their surfaces are polished

The geometries and tolerances are inspected as part of quality assurance

The tools are repackaged and, if necessary, marked with the number of refurbishment cycles and the post-refurbishment diameter

The refurbished tools are returned to the customer

Refurbished Walter tools can be identified by the Original Walter Quality marking, which indicates that the tool has been refurbished to the original manufacturer’s quality standards.

Shown is a Walter DC170 solid-carbide drill used by our customer to drill large quantities of 42CrMo4 quenched-and-tempered steel. After being resharpened to its original geometry and recoated with the original coating through Walter’s reconditioning service, the tool achieved a significantly longer service life than an equivalent tool refurbished elsewhere.

Original geometries, coatings, and tolerances

The cutting geometry of a cutting tool directly affects chip formation, cutting forces, surface quality, and tool life. During reconditioning, the geometry is restored according to Walter’s original manufacturing specifications.

Coating is an essential factor in a tool’s wear resistance and performance. When reconditioning its own tools, Walter uses the original coating process to keep the tool’s properties as close as possible to those of a new tool.

The tool’s tolerances are also checked during reconditioning. The measurements use the same quality criteria and modern measuring methods employed in the manufacture of new tools.

The image illustrates how refurbishing a tool multiple times reduces tool costs over its entire life cycle. According to Walter Tools, a properly refurbished tool can deliver savings of up to 50% compared with always replacing the tool with a new one.

Lower tool costs throughout the entire lifecycle

Tools are often taken out of service too early, even though they could be refurbished and returned to production. A tool can be refurbished several times, extending its overall service life and reducing the cost per use cycle.

Walter Reconditioning can deliver savings of up to 50% on tool costs. The actual savings depend on the tool type, purchase price, number of refurbishments, and application.

Refurbishing also reduces the need for new tools and helps make more efficient use of the materials invested in them.
