Boring

Boring is one of the key methods used to enlarge an existing hole or improve its quality while taking tolerances, surface roughness, and straightness into account. The versatility of the process lies in the available tool systems, which are suitable for a wide range of diameters and for both rough and fine boring operations.

Boring can broadly be divided into two areas: rough boring and fine boring. Rough boring focuses on enlarging an existing hole through efficient material removal. This is a preparatory stage in which the hole’s size and shape are brought closer to the final requirements. Multi-edge boring tools are often used for rough boring to maximize efficiency.

Unlike rough boring, fine boring focuses on achieving the required hole accuracy and final surface finish. Fine boring is generally performed with small cutting depths, typically less than 0.5 mm, making it possible to achieve hole tolerances in the IT6–IT8 range. The accuracy of the tool used at this stage is therefore critical, as the diameter must be adjustable with micrometer-level precision.

When selecting a tool system, it is important to consider the hole dimensions, such as the boring diameter and depth, as well as the specified limitations and quality requirements: tolerance, surface roughness, position, and straightness. An efficient tool makes it possible to meet these requirements while minimizing the time required for the operation.
