Mastercam Mill 2D 2D Sweeping

2D Sweeping is Mastercam’s traditional toolpath. It is especially useful when a Mill 3D license is not available but a simple solution is needed for machining shapes or surfaces. The toolpath is created by sweeping one chain (the transverse profile) along another chain (the longitudinal profile). This provides a controlled tool motion without requiring full 3D calculations.

Features

  • Transverse stepover: Defines how closely the toolpaths are spaced in the transverse direction. A smaller value improves surface finish but increases NC code length and machining time.
  • Cutting method: Options include parallel cutting and back-and-forth (zigzag) cutting, which can affect machining efficiency and surface finish.
  • Stock to leave: Allows material to be left for later finishing.
  • Tool-tip compensation: Compensates for the tool tip when using round-nose cutters.
  • Corner control: The tool can be directed to avoid sharp corners or all corners, helping prevent sudden changes in direction.
  • Compensation: Compensation can be adjusted to the right or left in both the transverse and longitudinal directions.
  • Roughing passes: Available when material needs to be removed at multiple depths using start and end Z values and step settings.

  • Without a 3D license: Provides an alternative for users who do not have access to Mill 3D capabilities.
  • Machining profiles and shapes: Suitable for simple surface toolpaths and shapes where two contours need to be combined.
  • Finishing corners and arcs: A good choice when shapes and surfaces need to be cleaned up without a full 3D license.

  • Tool selection: Ball-nose cutters provide a better surface finish when finishing contoured shapes.
  • Simulate before machining: This is recommended because the older calculation method does not always handle complex geometries as well as 3D toolpaths.
  • Roughing passes for thick workpieces: Use depth-based cutting to reduce tool load.
