Mastercam Mill 2D 3D Sweep

3D Sweep is a traditional Mastercam toolpath that can be used to machine 3D shapes when a full Mill 3D license is not available. The operation is chained from wireframe geometry, so creating the toolpath does not require surface geometry or a 3D model. This also makes it a useful option when the part is defined solely by wireframe geometry.

3D Sweep uses transverse and longitudinal chains to create a sweeping toolpath that follows the shape of the part. The user can select the machining direction (longitudinal or transverse), the machining method (such as zigzag, one-way, spiral, or five-axis variations), and the synchronization method, providing flexibility for machining complex parts.

Features

  • Chains are created from wireframe geometry; no surface model is required.
  • Option to define one or more transverse and longitudinal boundaries.
  • Machining methods include zigzag, one-way, spiral, and five-axis options.
  • Selectable machining direction: longitudinal or transverse.
  • Synchronization options: by entity, by branch, point-by-point, or manually.
  • Tip compensation and stock allowance improve the accuracy of the finished result.

Applications

  • Machining 3D shapes when a Mill 3D license is not available.
  • Machining molds and castings based on wireframe geometry.
  • Complex parts where combining profiles and toolpath boundaries creates a controlled tool movement.
  • Optimizing surface finish in five-axis applications with spiral or zigzag motion.

Benefits

  • Available even without a Mill 3D license.
  • Works from wireframe models and does not require 3D surfaces.
  • Flexible machining methods for even complex shapes.
  • Synchronization and compensation improve accuracy.
  • A proven and reliable solution backed by years of use.

Tips

  • Use 3D Sweep when the part is available only as wireframe geometry.
  • Choose the method (such as spiral or zigzag) according to the part’s shape and surface-finish requirements.
  • Use manual synchronization settings if automatic alignment does not produce the desired result.
  • Always simulate the toolpath before running it to identify potential errors.

Summary

Mastercam Mill 2D 3D Sweep is a traditional yet still useful toolpath that enables 3D machining without a Mill 3D license. It is based on chaining wireframe geometry and provides flexible methods for both 2D and five-axis applications. This makes it a valuable option when the part definition does not include surface models but complex toolpaths are still required.
