What is an NPT Thread?
An NPT thread (National Pipe Thread) is a US-standardized tapered pipe thread used to create tight pipe connections, especially in hydraulic and pneumatic applications. It is based on the ASME B1.20.1 standard and uses inch-based measurements. The NPT thread seals by the compression created between the mating threads as the external and internal threads are tightened together.
Structure and Dimensions of NPT Threads
NPT threads are tapered with a 1:16 taper angle. The thread profile angle is 60 degrees, which differentiates it from, for example, the BSPT thread, where the angle is 55 degrees. The thread pitch is specified in threads per inch (TPI), which is typical for inch-based threads such as UNC threads and UNF threads.
Thanks to its tapered design, the joint tightens axially and radially at the same time. This produces a metallic surface pressure between the threads, creating a mechanically secure and sealed joint. In practice, sealing material such as PTFE tape or thread sealant is often used, especially in pressurized systems, to ensure a leak-tight connection.
Machining NPT Threads in Workshops
In machine shops, NPT threads can be produced using several methods. When turning, thread cutting is performed on a CNC lathe, where the taper angle is programmed as part of the tool path. Alternatively, internal threads can be tapped—using a thread tap—if the size and dimensions allow for it. Thread milling is also possible, especially when exact tolerances are needed or difficult-to-machine materials are involved, such as stainless steel.
Because these threads are intended for pressurized applications, dimensional accuracy and surface finish are critical. Thread gauges or ring gauges are used during inspection to ensure the thread meets the required standard. The machinist must also account for potential plastic deformation of the material during tightening, which affects the final seal.
Differences Between NPT and BSP Threads in Machining
NPT threads are often confused with BSPT threads, but they are not compatible with each other. The difference lies in the thread angle and crest profile. In addition, the dimensions are governed by different standards, so matching nominal sizes does not ensure compatibility. In international machine shop projects, this is especially important, as using the wrong thread can result in leaks or component damage.
BSP threads can be either straight or tapered, while NPT is always tapered. This also affects how the joint seals and the choice of sealing solutions.
NPT Threads in the Machining Industry
NPT threads are widely used in the machining industry—for example, in hydraulic blocks, valves, compressed air lines, and LPG systems. Particularly with exports to customers operating in the US market, NPT is often the primary thread standard. From a machine shop’s perspective, this means managing inch-based measurements, using the correct tool profiles, and performing inspections in accordance with the standard.
NPT threads are a prime example of how thread standards such as the ISO metric thread and inch-based systems exist side-by-side in global machining. Choosing and properly manufacturing the correct thread is a key part of quality machining and reliable joint technology.
