Using the Mastercam Migration Wizard
The Mastercam Migration Wizard is a tool that updates settings and files from previous Mastercam versions for compatibility with a newer version. You can use the Migration Wizard to transfer tool libraries, operation libraries, default files, setup sheet files, and configuration files to a new Mastercam installation.
Using the Migration Wizard ensures that files are updated correctly and that the software remains stable.
Opening the Mastercam Migration Wizard
Open the Migration Wizard by starting Mastercam and selecting the following from the top menu:
File → Convert → Migration Wizard
Basic and advanced options
When you start the Migration Wizard, you are given two options. The recommended option is Advanced:
- Basic
- Automatically updates all files from the previous Mastercam version to the new version in the default locations.
- Advanced
- Provides more detailed settings—you can choose which files to update and which folders to retrieve them from. This option is recommended because it allows you to transfer only the files you need and keep your environment organized.
Selecting the source and destination folders
Select the source folder (the old version) and destination folder (the new version) to use for the migration. If you use the default Mastercam folder structure, you do not need to change the paths. Make sure that the Include subfolders option is enabled.
Selecting the Mastercam file types to update
By default, the Migration Wizard selects all file types for updating. Clear the selection for all files by clicking the File Types check box once, then select only the files that are relevant to the new version:
- Operation libraries
- Default files
- Tool libraries
- Setup sheet files
- Configuration files
Updating Mastercam postprocessors
The Migration Wizard can also update unprotected, open postprocessors, as well as machine and control definitions.
If you are a Mastercam Connect maintenance customer, we do not recommend updating postprocessors yourself, because doing so may not add the features of the new Mastercam version to the postprocessor. Mastercam Connect maintenance customers can request updated postprocessor packages from their reseller.
Selecting the Mastercam versions
Select the Mastercam version from which the data will be updated. Note that the Migration Wizard can update data from a maximum of three versions back. If the version you want to update is older than that, you must also install the intermediate versions on the workstation and use their Migration Wizards step by step.
Important notes
- Never copy Mastercam files directly from one version to another in Windows File Explorer. Always use the Migration Wizard.
- Incorrectly transferred files can make the software unstable.
- Use only Windows shared folders for tool libraries and configuration files.
- Using network drives and cloud services such as OneDrive can cause connection problems and slow down the software.
Summary
The Mastercam Migration Wizard is a safe and recommended way to bring a user's settings, libraries, and other files from an older version into a new version. Using the Migration Wizard ensures that the transfer is performed in a controlled manner and that the software operates reliably in the new environment.
