HSMWorks
What is HSMWorks?
HSMWorks is a SolidWorks-integrated CAM software that allows you to generate CNC machining toolpaths directly from a CAD model within the same interface. Autodesk HSMWorks supports 2.5 to 5-axis milling, turning, and mill-turn operations. The software is still available for existing users, but new license sales have been discontinued.
HSMWorks and CAD/CAM Integration
HSMWorks works directly inside the SolidWorks environment, so the solid model and any changes made to it are automatically updated on the CAM side. This reduces errors related to data transfer and speeds up CAM programming in the machine shop, where design changes are an everyday occurrence.
When CAD and CAM functions are in the same environment, the machinist or CAM programmer can define tools, cutting parameters, and toolpaths without separate export and import steps. This improves process control and reduces the risk of using outdated model versions in CNC machining.
HSMWorks and Machining Strategies
HSMWorks features a wide range of milling and turning strategies. 2.5-axis operations are suitable for typical CNC milling tasks, such as pocketing, slotting, and contouring. 3D and 5-axis strategies make it possible to machine complex surfaces and challenging parts, such as those found in mold and precision machining.
The software also utilizes dynamic milling principles, where the width of cut is kept controlled to optimize tool load. This supports efficient material removal and controlled cutting conditions on CNC milling machines.
HSMWorks and Post Processing
HSMWorks generates toolpaths, which are converted into machine-specific NC programs by a post-processor. A post-processor can be tailored to match the CNC control and machine in use, ensuring compatibility with the machine shop’s production environment. This is a vital part of CAM programming since machine-specific differences directly affect the G-code and runability.
HSMWorks and Availability
Sales of new HSMWorks licenses have been discontinued, and the software can no longer be purchased as a new subscription. Existing licenses will remain available until the end of their lifecycle as announced by Autodesk, which is in 2028. After that, use of the software and any related services will end. Autodesk is encouraging users to transition to the Fusion platform, where CAD and CAM features are integrated into a broader manufacturing suite.
Summary
HSMWorks is a CAM software integrated with SolidWorks for 2.5 to 5-axis CNC machining. Sales of new licenses have ended, and the software’s lifecycle will continue until 2028 for existing users.
