Mastercam is a CAD/CAM software system for programming CNC machine tools. It is used to design, calculate, simulate, and optimize toolpaths for a wide range of machines and manufacturing methods. The software supports milling, turning, multitasking machines, Swiss-type automatic lathes, wire EDM, and CNC router machining—from simple 2D machining to demanding multiaxis manufacturing.

Mastercam can be configured to match a company’s machine inventory, the parts it manufactures, and its programming requirements. Different licenses and extensions create a unified software environment that can grow along with the development of your production operations and machine inventory.

Mastercam CAD/CAM software for programming CNC machine tools

In Mastercam, the programmer transforms a part’s CAD geometry into a manufacturing process for a CNC machine. The programming process involves defining the stock, geometry to be machined, tools, holders, operations, and toolpaths, after which the entire process can be verified and simulated before generating machine-specific NC code.

Mastercam CAM licenses also include Mastercam Design’s 2D and 3D CAD capabilities. These tools can be used to create and modify wireframe geometry, surfaces, and solids, as well as prepare models imported from other CAD systems for machining.

This makes practical programming easier when a model received from a customer or engineering department is not ready for manufacturing as-is. Geometry can be repaired, completed, and modified directly in Mastercam, without having to make every manufacturing-related change in the original CAD system.

Mastercam supports a wide range of common CAD file formats, including STEP, IGES, DWG, DXF, SolidWorks, Solid Edge, Autodesk Inventor, and JT files.

Mastercam’s development began in 1983, and the software has been developed to meet the needs of CNC manufacturing for more than four decades. Today, Mastercam is part of Sandvik Manufacturing Solutions’ software portfolio and is used worldwide, from small machine shops to large international manufacturing companies.

Mastercam scales from simple 2D programming to demanding multiaxis and multichannel machining environments. The various Mastercam solutions can be used to program applications such as 2D and 3D milling, five-axis machining, CNC turning, lathes equipped with live tooling, Mill-Turn multitasking machines, Swiss-type automatic lathes, wire EDM machines, and CNC routers.

The same software family makes it possible to expand capabilities as production needs change or new machine tools are introduced. The specific features available depend on the Mastercam licenses and add-ons selected.

Mastercam is also widely used in technical education and CNC machining training. Mastercam is a Global Partner of WorldSkills International and participates in international skills competitions for CNC machining.

Toolpaths, Simulation, and Machine-Specific Postprocessors

Mastercam includes a wide range of toolpaths for roughing, finishing, drilling, turning, and multi-axis machining. The purpose of a toolpath is not merely to define the tool’s movements, but to carry out machining in a controlled manner while accounting for the machine, tool, workpiece, and manufacturing method being used.

Mastercam’s Dynamic Motion technology uses information about the remaining material and aims to keep tool loading under control, even during changes in direction and other demanding cutting conditions. Depending on the application, this method can reduce machining time, improve process reliability, and extend tool life.

Toolpaths can be reviewed and simulated before transferring the NC program to the machine tool. Simulation can reveal issues such as overcutting, remaining material, and interference between the tool, holder, and other modeled components during the programming stage.

A postprocessor converts the toolpaths designed in Mastercam into NC code that the machine tool and CNC control can understand. It accounts for the machine’s configuration, axes, control, canned cycles, and other machine-specific functions, making a properly developed postprocessor an essential part of a functional CAM environment.

Mastercam collaborates with several of the world’s leading machine tool and cutting tool manufacturers. Its machine tool manufacturing partner network includes DMG MORI, Mazak, Okuma, Makino, Haas Automation, Hermle, and DN Solutions, among others. Cutting tool partners include Walter Tools, Sandvik Coromant, Seco Tools, ISCAR, Kennametal, and Mitsubishi Materials.

This collaboration supports the development of machine environments, postprocessors, programming methods, and digital tool data for real-world production environments.

Digital product data and 3D geometries from cutting tool manufacturers can be used in CAM programming, allowing the tools and holders used in a program to be defined as accurately as possible to match the actual machining environment.

Mastercam through Camcut in Finland

Camcut is Mastercam’s official reseller and training provider in Finland. We help companies select a Mastercam solution that suits their machine tools, manufacturing methods, number of users, and future needs.

Our services include Mastercam licenses and extensions, Mastercam CONNECT maintenance, machine-specific postprocessors, software implementation, technical support, and Mastercam training. When needed, we also provide assistance with CAM programming, process planning, and the development of toolpaths and machining processes.

Camcut’s expertise combines CAM programming with cutting tools, toolholders, cutting data, and practical machining methods. This allows the Mastercam solution to be considered as part of the entire manufacturing process rather than simply as standalone software.

In Sweden, Mastercam Sverige is responsible for Mastercam licenses, postprocessors, training, and technical software support. Camcut works closely with Mastercam Sverige on customers’ manufacturing technology and machining solutions.
