Mastercam Blade Expert

Mastercam Blade Expert is a Mastercam add-on for 5-axis machining of impellers, fan and propeller components, turbine blades, blisks, and other multi-bladed parts. It automates toolpath generation in situations where narrow areas between blades, curved surfaces, and continuously changing tool-axis orientations make programming challenging.
Blade Expert generates toolpaths for roughing between blades, finishing blades and splitter blades, finishing floors, and machining blade-root fillets. The toolpaths are based on the part geometry and account for remaining stock, allowing machining to be focused on areas where material still needs to be removed.

Mastercam Blade Expert for 5-Axis Machining of Impellers, Fan Wheels, and Other Multi-Bladed Components
Programming multi-bladed components is one of the most demanding applications of 5-axis machining. Narrow spaces between the blades, long tool extensions, curved surfaces, and continuously changing tool orientations require precise control of both the geometry and tool axis throughout the toolpath.
Mastercam Blade Expert is designed specifically for these types of components. It can be used to program impellers, fans, propellers, turbine components, blisks, and other multi-bladed parts.
During programming, the component’s key geometric areas are defined, such as the blades, any splitter blades, the floor, and the root fillets. Based on this information, Blade Expert generates application-specific toolpaths without requiring the entire machining process to be built step by step using general-purpose multiaxis toolpaths.
The tool-axis orientation and tool-tip position are controlled according to the component’s geometry. This helps maintain tool accessibility in the areas between the blades and create controlled 5-axis movements, even when the tool orientation must change continuously throughout the toolpath.
Blade Expert supports flat end mills, corner-radius end mills, and ball-nose end mills, allowing tools to be selected according to the requirements of roughing, finishing, and the component geometry.

Roughing between blades and finishing of blades, floors, and fillets
Blade Expert divides the machining of a multi-bladed part into practical machining operations. The process can include removing material between the blades, finishing the main blades and splitter blades, finishing the floor, and machining the fillets in the blade-root areas.
During roughing, Blade Expert uses information about the remaining stock. Toolpaths are generated based on where material still needs to be removed, reducing unnecessary air cutting and helping direct subsequent machining operations toward the remaining material.
During finishing, the tool tip position and tool-axis orientation are controlled relative to the geometry of the blades, floor, and fillets. This is especially important when transitioning between different surfaces, where the tool orientation must change in a controlled manner throughout the 5-axis toolpath.
Blade Expert uses the same user interface logic as Mastercam’s other multiaxis toolpaths, so programming takes place in the familiar Mastercam environment. Blade Expert works with Mastercam Mill 3D and Router 3D configurations.
Blade Expert is a specialized solution designed for programming multi-bladed parts. Mastercam Multiaxis, on the other hand, offers a broader range of general-purpose 4- and 5-axis machining strategies for various multiaxis machining needs.
