Mastercam Deburr is a Mastercam add-on for burr removal and edge finishing. It automatically identifies the edges of a part from a solid model and machines them directly on a CNC machine as part of the same CAM program as the other machining operations.

With Deburr, burr removal can be moved from manual finishing into the machining process when the part geometry and machining environment allow it. The goal is to reduce manual finishing, improve edge consistency, and have the part more complete straight off the machine tool. The add-on can be used with Mastercam Mill, Mill 3D, Router, and Mill-Turn configurations.

Mastercam Deburr for automated deburring directly in the CAM environment

Mastercam Deburr creates a deburring toolpath directly from the part’s solid geometry. The programmer selects the part to be machined or the desired edges, defines the tool and deburring settings, and Mastercam then generates a toolpath that follows the edges.

The entire solid part can be included in edge recognition, after which individual edges can be excluded from machining as needed. This reduces manual geometry selection, especially for parts with many edges that require finishing.

Deburring can be performed while the part remains in the same setup as the rest of the machining operations. This reduces the need for separate manual finishing and allows the part to be completed further before the next operation or quality inspection.

Automated edge detection and consistent edge finishing

Mastercam Deburr identifies machinable edges directly from the solid model and generates a toolpath based on the part’s three-dimensional geometry. It is also suitable for sloped and contoured surfaces, where creating a conventional profile or chamfer toolpath may require more geometry selection and manual definition.

The toolpath follows the edge even when the orientation of the surrounding surfaces changes. This allows the edge finishing to remain more consistent along the entire edge compared with a toolpath based on a simple plane or 2D profile.

Automatic edge recognition reduces programming time, especially for parts with numerous edges to finish. Machine-based deburring also improves process repeatability and reduces variation in manual finishing.

3-axis deburring with different tool types

Mastercam Deburr is designed for three-axis deburring and edge finishing. The tool is selected based on the part geometry, the desired edge shape, the location of the edge being machined, and the tool’s reach. This allows the same Deburr operation to be used for different types of edge chamfers, radii, and more difficult-to-reach geometries.

Deburr supports several cutter types suitable for deburring and edge finishing, including chamfer mills, round-nose radius cutters, dovetail cutters, and lollipop-style end mills. Chamfer mills can be used to create standard edge chamfers, while round-nose radius cutters can finish shaped edges and create radii.

Dovetail cutters can also machine undercut chamfers that cannot be reached with a standard chamfer mill. Lollipop-style end mills are suitable for deburring undercut edges, intersecting holes, and other difficult-to-reach geometries, for example.

The desired edge finish can be defined using the tool and cutting parameters, while the tool’s contact with the part can be controlled throughout the toolpath. If necessary, the edge can be machined with multiple passes to produce the desired chamfer or radius.

Tool, Holder, and Fixture Collision Avoidance During Deburring

During deburring, the tool must be able to reach close to the part edges without the tool shank, shoulder, or holder contacting the part, fixture, or other geometry that must be avoided. Mastercam Deburr takes these factors into account when generating the toolpath.

Fixtures and other structures surrounding the part can be defined as avoidance geometry. The required clearance distances can also be specified for the tool shank, shoulder, and holder.

This allows the deburring toolpath to be better adapted to the actual machining environment during the CAM programming stage. This is especially valuable for hard-to-reach edges and parts where fixtures are located close to the geometry being finished.
