Mastercam Design File Translator

Mastercam supports a wide range of CAD file formats, allowing machining geometry to be imported directly from various design software applications for CAM programming. In addition to native CAD formats, Mastercam supports common exchange formats such as STEP, Parasolid, IGES, ACIS, and STL files.

Imported geometry can be used directly to create toolpaths and, when necessary, repaired, modified, or supplemented using Mastercam’s CAD tools before CAM programming. Support for specific file formats, file versions, and import and export capabilities depends on the Mastercam version being used and, for some native CAD formats, on the available licenses.

Mastercam File Translators for Importing and Exporting CAD Models

Mastercam can work with native files from many common CAD systems without requiring the model to be converted to a separate exchange format first. Supported CAD systems include SOLIDWORKS, Autodesk Inventor, CATIA, Creo, Siemens NX, Solid Edge, Rhino, AutoCAD, Alibre Design, KeyCreator, and SpaceClaim.

In addition to native CAD files, Mastercam supports common neutral exchange formats such as STEP, Parasolid, IGES, ACIS, and STL files. Depending on the format, both file import and export may be available, and supported file versions are updated with each new Mastercam release.

Direct CAD interfaces are particularly useful in machine shops where customer or design models come from several different CAD systems. Opening a native file reduces unnecessary file conversions and the associated need to inspect geometry before CAM programming.

Imported models can be modified as needed before toolpath programming. For example, geometry can be repaired, geometry that is unnecessary for machining can be removed, and the surfaces, curves, and construction geometry required for programming can be created.

Not all CAD interfaces are included with every Mastercam license. For example, directly reading certain CATIA, Creo, and Siemens NX files may require a separate translator license. PMI and MBD Information in Mastercam Programming

In addition to geometry, a CAD model can contain product definition information needed for manufacturing and inspection. Model-Based Definition (MBD) is based on attaching dimensions and other product information directly to the 3D model instead of, or alongside, a separate 2D drawing.

Mastercam can import PMI and MBD data from several CAD formats. These include STEP and files from several native CAD systems, such as Siemens NX, Creo, Autodesk Inventor, and CATIA V5.

When product definition information embedded in the model remains available throughout the CAD-to-CAM process, CAM programmers can review manufacturing-relevant information in the same environment as the geometry to be machined. This reduces the need to switch constantly between the 3D model, separate drawings, and other documents.

When dimensions and other product definition information travel with the 3D model from design through CAM programming, the same model can serve as the source for both geometry and the product information needed for manufacturing. The available PMI and MBD data, as well as how it is imported, depend on the CAD format, the information contained in the original model, and the Mastercam version being used.
