Thread turning
Thread turning is a machining method used to produce various thread profiles by turning. This process is particularly important in the manufacture of threaded components such as screws, nuts, and bolts. Thread turning differs from other turning methods primarily because it uses thread-turning tools specifically designed for the purpose and matched to the shape of the thread profile. Thread turning is based on using a turning tool that matches the thread profile and machines the thread with a feed movement corresponding to the thread pitch.
In addition, modern CAM software has brought significant improvements to thread turning, enabling the design and production of complex and unique thread profiles. CAM software can be used to generate precise toolpaths for various thread profiles, speeding up the manufacturing process and reducing the likelihood of errors. The form thread-turning capabilities enabled by CAM software make it possible to produce a wide range of threads, including special threads such as trapezoidal and rope threads.
Partial-profile and full-profile threading inserts are used in the thread-turning process, enabling accurate dimensions, a smooth surface finish, and correct thread geometry. OptiThreading is another specialized method, used especially when machining softer, long-chipping materials. With this method, the threading tool performs retracting movements during the toolpath, breaking the turning chip and thereby improving machining quality.
