Parting-Off and Grooving
Parting-off and grooving are two essential machining methods in turning.
Parting-off is a process in which a desired component is cut off from the material. It is often performed on a lathe, where the tool moves transversely across the workpiece to cut it off. Parting-off is one of the basic operations in machine-shop production and plays an important role, for example, in high-volume production on lathes equipped with bar feeders. Parting tools are specially designed for this task and are built to withstand the heavy loads and vibration typically encountered during parting-off.
Grooving, as the name suggests, focuses on machining grooves into the material. Grooving can be used for a variety of purposes, such as creating retaining-ring grooves, seal grooves, or belt grooves. Depending on its intended application, a groove may be deep or shallow, wide or narrow. Specialized grooving tools are used to produce grooves accurately and efficiently.
