Mastercam Postprocessor Modification

A postprocessor is an essential part of the Mastercam system because it determines how a toolpath created in the software is converted into machine-specific NC code. Every machine tool is different—even different models from the same manufacturer, with different options and accessories, may require a different code structure. For this reason, the postprocessor often needs to be customized to match the machine, controller, and the customer’s operating practices.

Customization Process

Modifying the postprocessor for simpler machine tools can usually be completed within a few days, provided that the necessary information and test files are available right away. For more complex multi-axis machines and specialized controllers, the process may take longer because testing and fine-tuning require multiple stages and checks.

Postprocessor modification is always a collaborative project between the customer and the postprocessor manufacturer. Camcut acts as the liaison in this process: we receive the customer’s feedback and test programs, evaluate the possible changes, and, when necessary, forward them to the postprocessor developer.

Providing Feedback and Testing

Postprocessor testing should begin with a simple test part that includes typical machining directions, tool changes, and canned cycles. This makes it easier to identify errors and ensures that the basic functions work correctly before testing a more extensive program.

If the postprocessor is tested directly on a production part, it is important to understand that during the initial stages, the NC code may not yet fully meet the machine’s requirements. Implementing changes and testing new versions can take time, so proceeding step by step is recommended.

Marking Up the Test Program

The easiest way to provide feedback on postprocessor behavior is to create a test program in Mastercam and clearly mark the required changes in the NC code. For example, asterisks (***) can be used to indicate sections where the user wants changes or where incorrect behavior was observed:

%
O0000(TEST PROGRAM)
N100 G21
N110 G0 G17 G40 G49 G80 G90
N120 T219 M6 ***M6 command only after the tool position***
N130 G0 G90 G54 X-25. Y10. A0. S3000 M3 ***The A-axis does not need to be output***
N140 G43 H219 Z25.
N150 Z10.
N160 G1 Z0. F600.
N170 X-15.

The modified NC code and the original Mastercam file are then sent to Camcut by email. We determine whether the requested changes can be implemented directly through Mastercam settings or whether the postprocessor requires more extensive modification by the manufacturer.

Required Information and Responsibilities

Postprocessor modification is only possible when the technical requirements and controller commands of the machine tool being used are known. If the customer does not know which G and M codes the machine requires, this information must be obtained from the machine importer or controller manufacturer before customizing the postprocessor.

Camcut is happy to assist with this process and advise on what information is needed to ensure that the project progresses as smoothly as possible.

Postprocessor modification is an important step in implementing the Mastercam system. Thorough testing and clear feedback significantly speed up the process. At its best, a properly configured postprocessor produces error-free NC code that is ready for production—safely, efficiently, and according to the user’s requirements.
