What is UnionChemnitz?
UnionChemnitz is a German machine tool manufacturer, best known for its horizontal boring mills and milling machines. Founded in 1852 in Chemnitz, it is the oldest machine tool manufacturer in Europe that is still in operation.
The History of UnionChemnitz
The roots of UnionChemnitz go back to 1852, when David Gustav Diehl founded the company in Chemnitz. In 1872, it became a joint stock company under the name Werkzeugmaschinenfabrik Union, vormals Diehl. The first boring mill was introduced in 1875. In 1936, Union merged with Karl-Wetzel-Maschinenfabrik to form Wetzel-UNION, based in Chemnitz. After World War II, in 1946, the company was nationalized. Following German reunification in 1990, the company was privatized, and in 1996, a new employee-owned company called Neue UNION was established. In 2011, UnionChemnitz joined the family-owned HerkulesGroup.
UnionChemnitz’s Products
The UnionChemnitz product range includes horizontal boring mills and milling machines with spindle diameters ranging from 110 mm to 260 mm. These machines are suited for machining large and heavy workpieces, with lengths up to 40 meters, heights up to 10 meters, and weights up to 250 tons. The machines are available with either linear or hydrostatic guideways.
Current Status of UnionChemnitz
Since 2020, UnionChemnitz’s horizontal boring mills and milling machines have been designed and manufactured in cooperation with WaldrichSiegen and Maschinenfabrik Herkules Meuselwitz. This arrangement enables the production and international sales of UnionChemnitz products through these companies.
