Mastercam Lathe Form Threading

Mastercam Lathe Form Threading is designed to simplify the machining of thread profiles that were previously difficult to manufacture, such as rope threads and large trapezoidal threads. This operation enables form threads to be turned using the so-called “long code” of a standard turning toolpath while following the defined geometry with any turning tool, providing greater flexibility and versatility.

When turning a form thread, the special thread profile can be defined either by drawing its geometry or parametrically by selecting one of four options: Trapezoidal, Rope, Flat, or Buttress. These profiles make it possible to manufacture more specialized thread profiles efficiently and accurately. Mastercam does not require separate thread-turning software for machining specialty threads, as the Form Threading function is included as a standard feature in the Mastercam Lathe license.

This operation includes:

• Tool and Thread Profile Selection: The user can select a suitable tool from the Mastercam tool library and define the thread profile either parametrically or by chaining geometry.
• Parametric data selection allows the profile to be selected from a drop-down menu. With the chaining option, the user can create any desired thread geometry, provided that it forms one complete thread.
• Defining Pitch and Length: The thread pitch can be entered manually or calculated using Mastercam’s built-in mathematical functions.
• Defining Cutting Motions: The roughing allowance and cutting-depth settings define how the thread is formed. 
• Verification and Final Inspection: As the final step, the user can check the finished result using the operation verification function to inspect the completed thread profile.
