Mastercam Multiaxis Multi-Surface

Multi-Surface is a powerful Mastercam multiaxis machining toolpath that allows multiple surfaces to control tool motion. The feature supports both roughing and finishing and is suitable for complex geometries where the part consists of several different shapes. Multi-Surface can be defined directly from selected model surfaces or basic shapes (cylinder, sphere, or box), and the software adjusts tool motion to those surfaces. This ensures controlled contact with the part, superior surface quality, and safe tool motion.

Features

Toolpath Type and Control

  • The toolpath can be created from multiple surfaces, a cylinder, sphere, or box.
  • Tool-tip control and tool-axis control are extensively adjustable.

Approach and Retract

  • The user can define separate approach and retract curves.
  • Options include the normal surface edge, skipping the first and last cuts, and smooth transitions.
  • Smooth approach and retract movements improve tool life and surface quality.

Safety Zone

  • The toolpath supports safety zones that can be rectangular, cylindrical, or spherical.
  • The size, position, and offset of the safety zone can be adjusted to ensure safe transitions and prevent collisions with fixtures or the part.
  • 5-axis motion limits can be set using a maximum angular step value.

Roughing

  • Depth cuts are available, with roughing and finishing stepovers defined separately.
  • The order of depth cuts can be selected by profiles or by depth.
  • This enables efficient material removal and accurate finishing in the same operation.

Filtering and Advanced Settings

  • Curve tolerance determines toolpath accuracy. A smaller value improves accuracy but increases NC code length.
  • Stepover can be adjusted both across and along the surface, providing control over surface quality and program size.
  • Advanced settings can be used to optimize machining speed and the smoothness of tool motion.

Applications

  • Complex parts with multiple surfaces of different shapes, such as molds, castings, and multi-part assemblies.
  • 5-axis parts that require both roughing and finishing in a single operation.
  • Parts where stock must be left for subsequent finishing operations.
  • Machining environments where safe clearance zones are essential.

Benefits

  • Flexibility – supports multiple surface models and shapes in a single toolpath.
  • Safety – safety zones and smooth transitions help protect tools and parts from collisions.
  • Accuracy – stepover, curve tolerance, and depth cuts produce a high-quality surface.
  • Efficiency – roughing and finishing can be combined in the same operation.
  • Cost-effectiveness – controlled motion and optimized approach movements reduce tool wear.

Tips

  • Always use safety zones when fixtures are located around the part or there is a risk of collision.
  • Choose an appropriate curve tolerance—a value that is too small increases program size, while a value that is too large reduces surface quality.
  • Use smooth approach and retract movements, especially when machining hard materials, to improve tool life.
  • Define roughing and finishing stepovers separately to ensure efficient material removal and a high-quality finish.
  • Set stepover values according to the part surface: a larger stepover is suitable for roughing, while a smaller stepover is better for finishing.

Summary

Mastercam Multiaxis Multi-Surface is an advanced 5-axis toolpath that provides a flexible and controlled solution for machining complex surfaces. It combines safety, accuracy, and efficiency and is suitable for both roughing and finishing. Multi-Surface can help optimize tool life, ensure a high-quality surface finish, and improve the efficiency of the entire machining process.
